WOMEN organisations and a political party Hindu Makkal Katchi has taken a firm stance in objecting to actress Nyantara playing the role of Seetha in a Telugu film Sri Ramarajyam. The protest is solely due to Nyantara’s illicit relationship with actor-turned-director Prabhu Deva. According to the women’s organisations Nyantara is completely unfit to portray virtuous woman Goddess Seetha on screen.

BOLLYWOOD actress Vidya Balan will represent Indian sensuality at its best in A Dirty Picture where she will revive the sex-appeal of late actress Silk Smitha.

Vidya Balan’s acting prowess needs no confirmation. But when you learn that she will be playing a character loosely based on the South sex-siren Silk Smitha (who featured in a string of soft-porn films in the 80s and early 90s), it certainly generates a lot of hype.

While a formulaic filmmaker would have thought of casting someone like today’s sex-symbol Mallika Sherawat to play the role of Silk Smitha, director Milan Luthria opted for Vidya Balan for the role in his film A Dirty Picture. “I wanted the casting to arouse interest. At the same time I wanted a process of discovery to happen with the film and lend a new dimension to Vidya Balan”, says Milan.

The buzz is that Vidya had reservations about the role and also laid her conditions before signing on the dotted line. Milan doesn’t deny, “Vidya had reservations regarding a lot of things and not just skin-show. When an actor plays an actor onscreen there is a tendency to get too absorbed in the character. Also Vidya wanted to understand the entire emotional graph of the character. The so-called reservations were more of questions that she had about her character and its portrayal”.

MAVERICK film maker Vishal Bhardwaj has a long-cherished desire to work with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

After the release of Guzaarish, the director has once again rekindled that thought to work with the actress, and also with the Guzaarish lead star Hrithik Roshan.

Vishal is noted for his adaptation of Shakespearean drama and he wants to complete his trilogy with the Bollywood version of Hamlet. He wants Hrithik to play Prince Hamlet of Denmark, and Aishwarya his lady love Ophelia.

Vishal’s earlier Shakespeare adaptations Maqbool and Omkara have received rave reviews and are considered to be his best works. Vishal has a flare for working with talented actors and actresses. Vishal has approached both the stars with the “Hamlet” idea.
