Baby Tayla faces second operation in three days

2010-07-28 00:00

TAYLA Grace Geddes will have her chest sewn closed today in her second operation in three days.

Doctors reconstructed the four-month-old’s missing septum and repaired the three holes in her heart during six hours of open heart surgery in Johannesburg on Monday.

The surgery went according to plan until her blood pressure dropped significantly when the doctors closed up her chest after the operation.

A decision was made to take the baby — with an open chest — into the intensive care unit, where she would remain until swelling subsided.

Tayla’s father, Peter Hamberger, confirmed yesterday that doctors will take the baby back to theatre to stitch up her chest today.

In addition to her serious heart condition, Monday’s surgery confirmed that young Tayla was born without a thymus gland, which produces T-lymphocytes or T-cells, an essential part of the immune system.

Doctors are expected to consider carefully all Tayla’s medical abnormalities before continuing on a course of treatment.

The baby requires further surgery as her feeding tube has caused damage to her small oesophagus. Doctors also plan to insert a feeding line directly into her stomach to facilitate easy feeding when she is eventually discharged.

Tayla will remain at Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg until doctors deem her fit to return home.
