Baby dies on city corner

2013-06-19 00:00

A TWO-MONTH-OLD baby boy died on the side of the road near Alexandra Park yesterday.

The boy was being rushed to hospital by his parents after they noticed that he was struggling to breathe.

On their way to hospital, they encountered a private service ambulance parked on the side of the road at the corner of Alan Paton Avenue and Alexandra Road. For some time, the paramedics tried to resuscitate the child, but they later declared him dead at the scene.

The distraught father, who was standing right next to the paramedics as they tried to resuscitate the child, broke down and openly wept when the paramedics told him his son had died. He picked up the little body of his son, lying on the ground on a blanket, and slowly rocked him against his chest as he wept.

One of the paramedics who tried to comfort the parents had tears welling up in her eyes after the child was declared dead.

Police spokesperson Joey Jevaan said the child died of natural causes. The police had stopped to assist.

Attempts by The Witness to reach the parents later were unsuccessful.
