Baby seat saves infant as runaway car crashes into yard

2010-10-26 00:00

A YOUNG child escaped serious injury yesterday morning after the car she was in rolled down a road, smashed through a fence and plunged down a steep bank while she was strapped into a baby seat.

Brake failure may have been the cause of the crash.

The car plunged into the yard of a private home in Northern Park and landed on its side.

The infant, who cannot be named as the mother reportedly objected to the disclosure of their names, was alone in the car at the time.

It is not known how old she is.

According to eyewitnesses, the mother and the baby were on their way to a nearby crèche when the accident happened.

The mother had parked her VW Polo at Methley Road at the top of a steep decline.

Witnesses said she got out of the car to take the baby out when the car suddenly started rolling away.

Said Romaine Naicker, the home owners’ son who witnessed the accident, “I am not entirely sure whether she forgot to pull up the handbrake or if the car experienced some kind of brake failure, because after she got out, the car simply rolled towards our home.”

The car smashed through palisade fencing, travelled down the sharp decline — estimated to be a drop of at least three metres — and crashed through a structure in the yard where it came to a standstill with the baby still inside.

“The mother was shocked to the core,” said Naicker. “It was a miracle that the baby escaped with just a scratch after such an accident.”

Sushie Naicker, the home owner, said they were grateful the baby was not injured.

An Msunduzi fire department official who attended the scene said it was not clear what had caused the accident.

“The woman told us that she had pulled her handbrake up, but the car just rolled off,” he said.
