Bacher bats for AB as Test skipper, with Faf by his side

CAPE TOWN — Former South African captain Ali Bacher says AB de Villiers should be the Proteas’ next Test skipper, with Faf du Plessis as vice-captain.

Graeme Smith retired from international cricket last month, leaving the spot of Test skipper vacant.

The Cricket South Africa (CSA) board meets in June when the new Test captain will be approved.

De Villiers, Du Plessis, Hashim Amla and JP Duminy appear to be the only candidates up for consideration.

However, according to Bacher, the decision is clear-cut.

“I will give AB de Villiers the captaincy and appoint Faf as vice-captain,” Bacher told the supersport.com website.

“As a combination, they complement each other well and their leadership qualities will be terrific for South Africa.

“Both AB and Faf are potentially good leaders. AB is dynamic, enterprising, the best all-round batsman in the world today and full of enthusiasm.

“Faf is quieter on the field. He possesses big match temperament. He is focused, determined and I like his body language. He doesn’t lose his cool.

“I will make AB captain, but without the gloves. With AB as skipper and Faf as vice-captain, SA will be blessed with an admirable combination,” he added.

The Proteas’ next Test assignment is a two-match series in Sri Lanka in July.
