Back to school on a budget

2011-01-12 00:00

A SNAP survey of school uniform outlets yesterday revealed that some outlets are keeping their prices the same as they were last year.

Ahead of schools reopening next week, The Witness learned that at one of the suppliers we spoke to, no changes are expected in the price of school uniforms compared to last year.

The Hub confirmed that their prices are remaining at 2010 levels. Parents will pay R39,99 for grey trousers at Jet and Jet Mart Stores and R42,99 at Pep — these prices rise as the sizes rise.

Stores have various options available offering different labels at varying prices.

Jet and Jet Mart stores offer a R20 discount with every Toughees’ shoes purchased at the price of R189,99.

Toughees’ shoes at Pep range from R109,99 to R179,99. School socks cost between R6,99 and R19,99. White shirts — long- and short- sleeved — are priced from R19,99 to R44,99. Schoolgirl’s skirts of all colours can be found at Pep for R16,99 to R29,99.

According to prices given to The Witness by retailers, the cost of clothing a grade one pupil — shoes, socks, skirt or trousers and shirt — is as follows:

Jet R216,96 for girls and R236,96 for boys

Pep R169,46 for girls and R236,96 for boys

Ackermans R197,80 for girls and R214,80 for boys

Hub R204,80 for girls and R212,80 for boys.
