Bafana likely to face ‘different’ Egypt

RUSTENBURG — Bafana Bafana players believe playing Egypt in Cairo will be a different experience altogether. The two nations meet in a 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on June 5 at the Cairo International Stadium.

Egypt and SA meet for the second time in the space of three months, with Bafana Bafana winning the last tie 1-0 in Johannesburg in April.

SuperSport United captain Morgan Gould was in Egypt in March this year with his club on CAF club duty where they lost 2-0 to Egyptian giants Al Ahly, who have the bulk of the national team players.

“This will definitely be a different experience, back in April I was on club duty and although we played well against them we lost. This time we are going for the country and the stakes are higher,” said Gould.

“The expectations now are that we can do it, more so because we were able to defeat them in our last match. But still we should not be complacent because of that victory. We know it’s going to be very difficult and we have to be strong mentally.”

With 15 caps to his name, Gould was captain of Bafana Bafana in the match against Tanzania and had to lead from the front. He knows what it takes to win away.

“Playing them in our backyard was not easy so this will be twice as hard, Egypt are no pushovers …” he said. “We need to focus on what we have to do and I believe we have the mentality to do just that,” he said.

“The goal is to get three points, but we will still be happy with a point. We must not make the mistake that they are weakened side even though they are bottom of the group …”

Though Steven Pienaar returns as captain, the experienced Gould will be expected to guide new arrivals like midfielder Hlompho Kekana who earned his first Bafana cap against Tanzania.
