‘Bafana ready for cup qualifier’

2014-11-13 00:00

BAFANA Bafana winger Mandla Masango insists that the squad’s preparations for Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan have not been hampered by the uncertainty surrounding the tournament.

As of yesterday, Caf was still looking for an emergency host nation for Afcon 2015 following Morocco’s decision to pull out amid concerns that Ebola could reach their shores during the competition.

But, according to Masango, Bafana have not been affected by the administrative issues.

“Our job is to play football,” he told The Witness yesterday. “We leave the rest to the people who are responsible for that. Our main aim is to focus on the upcoming qualifiers.”

Masango added that the Bafana were not the favourites for Saturday’s clash despite being top of Group A and having beaten Sudan 3-0 away from home in the first round of qualifiers. “Any team stands a good chance of qualifying. We just need to want it badly. We are not comfortable,” he said.

The speedster was recovering from a lower back spasm, but was quick to declare himself fit and available for Saturday.

“I am feeling a little bit of an aftereffect from the injury. Often it is all in the mind after you have been injured,” he said. “But I am fine now and I will be ready for Saturday.”
