Bafana set to play friendlies during Fifa international breaks

2013-09-19 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Following the country’s failure to advance to the final round of the World Cup qualifiers, Bafana Bafana will have to settle for friendly games during the upcoming Fifa international breaks (on October 11 to 15 and November 15 to 19).

Dominic Chimhavi, Safa’s head of communications, said the names of Bafana’s opponents will be made in the near future.

“We will definitely be playing in those Fifa weeks but we have yet to decide on the opponents,” he told the Kick-Off website.

Bafana lost their ticket to the 2014 global showpiece when they finished as Group A runners up, trailing winners Ethiopia by two points.

Bafana’s game in November will be the 19th edition of the annual Nelson Mandela Challenge which dates back to 1994.

Meanwhile, Bafana found out yesterday that they have been drawn in Group A with African champions Nigeria as well as Mali and Mozambique for next year’s Caf African Nations championship.

The tournament, due to take place in South Africa from January 11 to February 1, 2014, pits the continent’s best national teams, composed of only locally-based players, against each other.

As many as 16 teams including hosts South Africa entered the draw, which was conducted by Caf secretary general, Hicham El Amrani. All the qualified teams with the exception of hosts South Africa, were ranked based on their performances during the last two editions of the competition.
