Bakkie toppled by winds

2009-08-19 00:00

A DRIVER and his assistant escaped with minor injuries when their bakkie, whose trailer was loaded with bulk toilet rolls, landed in a ditch after it was pushed off the road by heavy winds on the N3 near New England road.

According to Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha, the accident was caused by heavy winds.

The trailer rolled over the guardrails and went down the embankment losing part of its load along the way.

SAPS collision unit spokesman, Captain Dolf Otto, said the driver’s assistant was doused with diesel in the process and the driver received minor injuries. Paramedics pulled both men from the vehicle and they were taken to hospital.

In Durban, strong winds caused a tip-truck to topple over, injuring the driver, Discovery ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said. He said the truck driver had stopped the truck on a slope and was offloading sand when the truck was blown over by wind. The truck was found lying on its side with its bin open. The driver managed to get out of the vehicle and was treated for his injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital.
