Balance wristbands a scam

2011-01-15 00:00

It’s a scam! says the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

The ACCC has slammed down on Power Balance products after Power Balance admitted that there was no scientific evidence or reasonable basis for the benefits the products claimed. The body has allowed misled Australian consumers to demand a refund.

Power Balance products (wristbands and pendants) claim to improve the wearer’s flexibility, strength and endurance via a treated hologram that works positively with the body’s natural energy field.

Chairman of the ACCC, Graeme Samuel said in a statement that such claims were likely to mislead consumers into believing that Power Balance products have benefits that they do not actually have.

“Consumers should be wary of other similar products on the market that make unsubstantiated claims, when they may be no more beneficial than a rubber band.”

The claims were found to be in violation with the provisions of the Trade Practices Act of 1974, which explicitly prohibits deceptive and misleading advertisement of products sold in Australia, compelling Power Balance to rectify any misleading information from their Australian website, their packaging and advertising and to remove the words “Performance Technology” from the slogan of products sold in Australia. They must also refund misled customers.

In South Africa however, SPT (the exclusive distributor of Power Balance in South Africa) Head of Sales and Marketing, Steven Reed said the products had met the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASASA) regulations and will continue to be sold and advertised as is.

He said, in regard to misled South Africans being refunded, that disgruntled purchasers have always had a 30-day no questions asked money back guarantee.
