Bantwini to perform in tribute on Youth Day

2013-06-11 00:00

KWAMASHU-BORN singer Zakes Bantwini will be paying tribute to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for freedom in the 1976 uprisings in Soweto, in a special concert at the ICC Arena in Durban on Friday.

“The concert will be a tribute to the young school children who stood up and said: ‘Let us study and understand in a language we want’,” Bantwini said of the Youth Day event.

“Their protest was about freedom of language, something that cuts across all race groups. Pupils must have that choice. June 16 is not a black thing; it is for all South Africans. It is a chance for every person to pay tribute and respect.”

The singer, who believes in the unifying ability of music, wants those who attend the concert to wear their school uniforms.

“I want the youth of South Africa to be proud to be attending school, and the same goes for those who have completed their education — let’s wear our uniforms with pride,” he said.

Bantwini, who was one of the artists at the recent MTV Africa All Stars concert headlined by Snoop Lion, will be performing jazz songs and popular tracks from his album Love, Light and Music, along with his other hits.

Fans can also look forward to funky house interpretations of old styles, mixed with new sounds.

Bantwini will be joined at the concert by Idols 2012 winner, Khaya Mthethwa, L’vovo Derrango — who will be sharing the stage with Bantwini in KwaZulu-Natal for the first time since 2008, DJ Black Coffee and Themba Mkhize.

“Khaya is a very good friend of mine and after Clash of the Choirs, I told him what I wanted to do and he was on board straight away,” Bantwini said

“Themba is a legend and it’s such an honour that he’s agreed to perform with me, and Black Coffee is like a brother to me. I’m thrilled that they all wanted to be involved.”

Fans will also get to see Team Zakes, the singer’s choral group from the recent Clash of the Choirs television series on Mzansi Magic, who will perform Redemption Song, which cemented their position in the top three.

“I want to give my fans a meaningful show,” Bantwini said.

“I want to tell my story through music, so that people get to know who I am and what I believe ... and what Youth Day, June 16, and youth month, mean to me.”

The singer added: “I’m so excited to take my show home and give my loyal Durban fans the experience of Upfront with Zakes Bantwini.

“I know this is going to be one of my best performances to date.”

Doors open at 6.30 pm and the Upfront With Zakes Bantwini concert starts at 7.30 pm. Tickets are R150 at Computicket and Shoprite Checkers stores.
