Barbarians square series with win against Pumas

2011-06-13 00:00

RESISTENCIA — Wing Benjamin Lapeyre ran in two tries as the French Barbarians beat Argentina 21-18 to square their two-match series 1-1 on Saturday.

Fullback Romain Teulet kicked the rest of the Barbarians’ points with a conversion and three penalties. He also missed three kicks that would have increased the winning margin.

The one positive from a poor display by a Pumas team showing 12 changes from last Saturday’s 23-19 win in Buenos Aires was the perfect kicking performance of flyhalf Nicolas Sanchez, who slotted home all six of his kicks on his debut.

The negative aspect of the kicks was Argentina’s decision to take them all rather than seeking touch, which would have brought them much needed lineout practice.

The Barbarians dominated the Pumas pack for the most part, giving their backs far more ball than that enjoyed by Argentina’s three-quarters.

Flyhalf Remy Tales set up the first try just before the half-hour with a chip ahead that was picked up by centre Guillaume Bousses, a try scorer last weekend, who fed Lapeyre to run in under the posts.

Lapayre touched down in the corner for his second try less than 10 minutes into the second half following a grubber kick by Teulet.

Argentina used the series to test a large squad as they prepare for the World Cup later this year and the players who showed up best were part of the third-string Pampas XV who won South Africa’s Vodacom Cup last month.

Few 2007 World Cup veterans were involved and only one on Saturday, prop Martin Scelzo. Prop Agustin Creevy skippered the side.
