Bass contest lures 800 anglers

2013-03-18 00:00

MORE than 800 fishermen cast their lines and tried their luck at landing the title of the best bass fisherman in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday.

Farmers in the New Hanover area opened 18 farm dams for the annual event, which is a fundraiser for New Hanover Preparatory School.

Armed with cooler boxes and camping chairs, the fishermen cast their lures on dams that were swollen by recent rains.

Several pupils also tried their luck, although most managed to snag reeds and picnic baskets.

Bass fishing requires patience and a mix of luck and skill in choosing the right lure.

The entrants ranged in age from two-and-a-half years to 80, and the sponsored prizes were worth R10 000 in total.

After the day’s fishing, Jed Brown was unanimously declared the overall winner with his catch of a 65-centimetre bass.

He caught the bass on Cliff’s Farm. It was tagged and released in line with the competition principles.

Junior fisherman Gerhard van Greuning (10) was named best junior bass fisherman for his overall catch.

While discussions touched on lures and casting techniques, most of the anglers came prepared with a “fish that got away story”. — Witness Reporter.
