Battlefields Festival to showcase Ladysmith’s heritage

2010-07-02 00:00

THE Ladysmith/Emnambithi Municipality, in conjunction with the departments of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation and the Office of the Premier, will host a Battlefields Festival on July 3.

This festival aims to showcase the contributions of different communities in the district in deepening and strengthening nation building through the sharing of experiences.

Divided into three components, the event aims to show festival-goers the unique mix of the Ladysmith district’s heritage.

The programme will kick off with the “Freedom of the Town” where previous recipients of this honour will exercise their right and march through the streets of Ladysmith.

This will be followed by the “Multicultural Cuisine Exhibition” where different groups will showcase their traditional cuisine, arts and crafts, music, dance, dress and cultural practices.

The third element will be celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the most famous exponents of isicathamiya music, as well as the 70th birthday of their leader, Dr Joseph Shabalala.

This event will start at 9 am in Murchison Street in front of the town hall.

All are welcome to attend the festival and celebrate South Africa’s cultural diversity.
