Beating: Probe into girl’s death

2012-01-12 00:00

AN inquest docket has been registered to investigate the death of a 16-year-old girl from Lindelani township, north of Durban, who died in hospital after allegedly being sjambokked by her father.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Captain Thulani Zwane, said the girl allegedly drank her grandfather’s medication after being punished and died after being admitted at Mahatma Ghandi Hospital in Phoenix.

“The postmortem will be conducted to determine whether the death was caused by the beating or by the medication,” Zwane said.

At the time of going to print, Zwane could not confirm reports that the girl’s grandparents were beaten up by members of the community, who alleged that they secretly buried the girl in the family’s backyard.

Reports said members of the public were accusing the grandparents of practising witchcraft.
