Become unstoppable

CINDY Norcott’s 20-year journey in business has certainly taught her many things and she shares these insights in her book, How to be Unstoppable and Achieve More in Business and Life.

You need to get this book if you want to be better at what you already do, or if you are thinking about embarking on the road to entrepreneurialism, or if you just want to be able to lead a better life.

But first, about Norcott. She is the owner of award-winning Pro-Appointments recruitment agency based in Westville, Durban. She is a motivational speaker, a mother and wife, an investor in commercial property and founder and chairperson of the charity organisation the Robin Hood Foundation.

The book is peppered with anecdotes from other people about the way Norcott lives and works — think unstoppable — and it is soon apparent in the book that this woman has exceptional energy and talent; and is focused on opportunity.

“When I drive from one meeting to the next, I see potential business ideas and new contacts in the new buildings being built, the parked company cars, and the billboards I pass. I go to parties, social events and networking events, expecting to have fruitful meetings and to form synergies with like-minded people,” she writes.

Don’t be surprised if you cannot start implementing all the advice she imparts in this book, all at once, even though, after reading it, you might well feel that way inclined.

You will see, from this book, that it has taken Norcott 20 years of hard work and some mistakes along the way to get where she is.

This book is well written, in mostly short, easy-to-read sentences and Norcott manages to impart a great deal of information in only 157 pages.

She literally provides you with the ingredients to become a super achiever.

Chapters on learning to handle stress, having “rock-solid confidence”, maintaining integrity and being an excellent time manager are sure to resonate well with businesspeople these days, where change seems almost a norm.

I especially liked the way she deals with leadership and management, by defining management as leadership in practice.

Often in business books, the two subjects are dealt with separately, as if leadership is this lofty thing that only involves strategy and executive-level decision-making.

“Leadership is about relationships, getting to know your team, communicating with them, learning about them and then getting the most out of them while helping them reach their goals,” she writes.

She deals frankly with the problems she encountered with management and leadership earlier in her career, and she cautions that one cannot be a “lone ranger”, and that one needs to elicit the help of others in order to make your dreams happen.

“There is an exponential power when several people work together on a project. Synergy happens when one plus one equals three,” she writes.

I singled this chapter out because there is often a feeling among business people, particularly in smaller businesses, to want to do it all themselves, particularly if that individual is entrepreneurial by nature.

My guess is that the best value will be gained from this book by keeping it near at hand, either at home or at work, to be read in small bites, every now and again, just to remind oneself what it takes to succeed.
