Beijing: SA triathlete withdraws

2008-08-07 00:00

Team South Africa’s medal hopes took a knock yesterday with the withdrawal of triathlon star Hendrik de Villiers.

“I was about to board a flight when I received a call to say that Hendrik had been forced to withdraw due to illness that developed this week” said Gideon Sam, president of Triathlon South Africa. This is extremely disappointing, as he had been progressing so well and we had hopes that he might be in line for a medal.”

De Villiers, the continental champion, won the Richards Bay leg of the World Cup Series in 2007 and subsequently progressed to finish within 36 seconds of winning the recent World Cup, giving him a top 10 ranking.

Team Medical Officer Dr Shuaib Manjra, said: “Hendrik exacerbated an illness this week that required his hospitalisation in South Africa and his withdrawal from competition. This is clearly a disappointment for the team and the loss of a potential medal”
