Berg winds make life difficult at Oval

2010-09-22 00:00

IT’S like those eat-as-much-as-you-want buffets at the Maritzburg Oval these days, although if you’re not a batsman it’s like trying to find a drop of water in the desert.

The unpleasant conditions reached a new low yesterday as gale-force Berg winds made bowling and fielding extremely difficult. To their credit, bowlers and fielders stuck to their task with admirable determination, but with little luck until the batsmen tried to force the issue or got themselves out through careless shot selection.

Inland ended on 261 for three in the allotted 60 first-innings overs in reply to Coastal’s 278 for two at their compulsory declaration, and the Durban boys were on 289 for nine from 56 overs when the match fizzled out.

Today sees the 40-over bash from 10 am and with the likes of one-day specialist Morné van Vuuren turning out, it should be worth popping out of the office for an unexpected meeting or two.

Inland coach Doug Watson is looking forward to the Provincial Challenge competition that begins at the Oval next Thursday against the powerful Northerns combination.

Watson said exciting young left-arm seamer Athi Maposa and talented batter Devon Conway have joined the squad, and while batsmen Brad Moses and Glen Addicott are with the Dolphins this week, “they are also available for us should the franchise not need them”.

“There is the possibility that former Inland skipper and all-rounder Ross McMillan will be available, while South Western Districts all-rounder Rudi Hillerman joins us this week and Chad Barron had a very good off-season with the Dolphins Academy.”

Watson added that talented Coastal’s batsman Greg Fotheringham is also considering throwing in his lot with the Inland squad.
