Bessie Head Library launches WiFi service

2014-05-29 00:00

THE city’s Bessie Head Library now boasts WiFi technology, to improve the use of Internet services there, thanks to an initiative of the U.S. Consulate in Durban.

This was announced at the launch of the WiFi Project on Tuesday at the American Corner of the library.

The project cost R25 000, which was paid for by the U.S. Consul.

The WiFi service is free to anyone who comes to the library, but is best received in the American Corner. There is no user code, but users must agree to the terms and conditions to access it.

The deputy chief of mission, Virginia Palmer, said every year they tried to improve the American Corner because they want to increase the numbers of people coming to the library.

“We know that education is the key to success and this is a small way to ensure those who visit the American Corner improve their technological skills,” she said.

Palmer said the initiative comes with a two-year subscription fee and upgraded Internet.

“We want to encourage the youth to use the free access to Internet services and learn more about using social networks to connect globally,” she said.
