Best brains in SA over the moon as education department honours their achievement

2014-01-07 00:00

“IT was completely unreal,” said Priyanka Ramgoolam, one of the top matriculants from Pietermaritzburg, speaking of the ceremony held by the Department of Basic Education in Johannesburg last night to honour the top 25 matriculants in the country this year.

Of the 25 matriculants, Priyanka and another Pietermaritzburg youngster, Yusuf Mahomed, were in joint third position in the country.

At least four other pupils in the top 25 were from KwaZulu-Natal.

The pupils were also given gifts, including computer tablets and bursaries.

An excited Priyanka added she still could not believe it. “Everyone here is very excited, and I am very happy to be amongst the best brains in the country. This experience has been incredible”.

Yusuf said he was very pleased with being in the top three in the country.

“I got 10 distinctions but I think that my mark was not that high. I was third but I had more distinctions [than the ones in front].” However, he said he was still pleased with his achievement because he had not expected it.
