Best ever: SA scientists ‘magnificent’

2012-05-26 00:00

CAPE TOWN — A paradigm shift will take place in science, technology and engineering in Africa with the erection of the largest part of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA).

This was the response of South African National Space Agency (Sansa) CEO Dr Sandile Malinga to an enquiry following the announcement yesterday.

He said this success is one of the country’s greatest ever. Reactions to the announcement yesterday afternoon in Amsterdam, Cape Town and Pretoria were received from many quarters.

National Research Foundation (NRF) CEO Dr Albert van Jaarsveld said from the U.S., “I am overjoyed at the result. It is testament to a magnificent effort on the part of our team under Dr Bernie Fanaroff. The team of scientists’ preparation of the South African bid over the past few years was clearly of the highest technical standard.

“The expected investment will achieve wonders for the future of astronomy and technology in South Africa and Africa as a whole,” he said.

The University of Cape Town said this is one of the largest undertakings in the country’s history and confirms that the country can answer some of science’s toughest questions, while the University of the Witwatersrand described it a proud one for SA.
