Better organised Samas puts smiles on facesthe winners

2012-05-02 00:00

VIEWERS watching the 18th South African Music Awards (Samas) on Monday evening would have noticed that they were better organised than in previous years.

Last year’s Samas made headlines for TV glitches, and guests being sent from pillar to post, with some names not even on the guest list, said reports.

The awards moved back to their home venue, Sun City in North West, after using Montecasino in Johannesburg last year.

In an open letter to the Samas last year, City Press entertainment editor Lesley Mofokeng wrote: “The shoddy production and blunders televised left me in tears of laughter and disappointment. However, this year’s Samas put a smile on my face as it showcased South Africa’s great talent.”

5fm presenter Gareth Cliff tweeted: “I’m actually enjoying the Samas a lot. Well done Randall [Abrahrams, Idols judge and chief executive of Samas]!”

Presenters Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse and Riaan Cruywagen took viewers on a mellow journey with their slick narration, sharing stories about the record of the year nominees.

HHP brought the house down with his much-loved track Bosso Ke mang.

But the real star of the show was singer Zahara, real name Bulelwa Mkutukana, who scooped eight awards including the best album of the year.

She thanked God, her parents and supporters for all the love they’ve shown her. “… Dreams do come true,” she said tearfully as she took the stage.

Zahara’s debut album sold more than 300 000 copies.

The new kids on the block Mi Casa walked away with three awards, including MTN Record of the Year.

Legends Ray Phiri and Vusi Mahlasela were honoured with Lifetime Achievement Awards.
