Beware of poisonous mushrooms

2014-10-15 00:00

BE wary about what you pick off the land and put into your mouth this summer.

This is a warning to both parents and their children from the KZN Emergency Medical Services (EMS) who are concerned about people eating wild mushrooms picked from their gardens or the countryside.

While the majority of mushrooms found across the country are not poisonous, the few that are have resulted in many fatalities over the years.

The KZN EMS’s Robert McKenzie said the consequences of eating poisonous wild mushrooms can range from dizziness to severe diarrhoea and even death. He said although it was not that common, they did respond to cases of mushroom poisoning, which were preventable.

He said people should only eat mushrooms that they were familiar with and should not combine different mushroom types in meals.

“If you were to try a new species, consume only a small amount to reduce the effects it might have. People react differently to certain mushroom species.”

McKenzie warned that if people feel ill after consuming mushrooms, they should seek medical help immediately.
