Beyoncé earns acting credibility in ‘Cadillac’

2009-06-29 00:00

AT last, Beyoncé’s found her own.

For the first time that I can remember, the chart-topping pop star (and occasional actress) has finally managed to rise to the occasion and pull off a phenomenal performance on film.

This week saw the release of the much anticipated Cadillac Records in the City of Choice ... Man, what a movie! What brilliant performances!

That is what sticks out most about this film. Yes, the storyline was good. Yes, the soundtrack may have brought back good memories for most. But, I believe — and so do many of the others who have reviewed this production — that every actor in it was on point.

Cadillac Records visits the musical era from the early ’40s through to the late ’60s. It tells the story of Chicago-based record company executive Leonard Chess (Adrien Brody) and the artists who signed to his label, Chess Records.

Why I singled out the self-proclaimed diva, however, is because as much of a fan as I am, before her portrayal of the blond soul singer in this film, I saw every Beyoncé movie as just another way for Hollywood to capitalise on the singer’s fan base.

Most of her previous roles were shallow, watered down, unchallenging and stereotypical. In this movie, however, we see the diva doing what a diva does best: perform to the max — and on point.

The movie also stars Gabrielle Union, Jeffery Wright and Cedric the Entertainer — all of whom were beyond great.

Another surprising performance came from rapper Mos Def. His performance of the rock ’n roll maestro, famous for his on-stage chicken-walk, Chuck Berry, was surprising. He is a rapper after all, — who knew that he could pass for an actor too?

The movie and cast have been nominated for and won numerous awards since the film’s debut. In my opinion, it (or they) deserve every single one of them. A biopic to be reckoned with ... at last! ****
