Bible lost during WW2 returns home to SA

2014-08-12 00:00

THE Bible that Norman Edward Muller lost in WW2 is finally back with his family in South Africa.

The Afrikaans Bible was found during the war by the father of New Zealander Jill Porter, and after a long journey, was handed to Muller’s oldest living relative, Maxie Nel (87), in Pretoria last week.

Porter found the Bible in her parents’ home, and for years had been looking for the owner through Facebook.

Irma Joubert, Nel’s daughter, said Porter had given the Bible to the parents of a friend, Chris and Pat Clark, in July, to take back with them to South Africa.

The Clarks had been visiting New Zealand.

Porter said that last Saturday she watched on Skype how the Bible was finally handed over to Nel. Despite a few technical hitches with Skype, it was an emotional moment. “Norman and my father would never have thought how small the world is today thanks to technology.”

Joubert posted on Facebook how grateful the family are to get the Bible back.

Porter said the search was worth the trouble now that the Bible is back with the family of its owner.
