Big B on form as a ghost in charming film for families

2008-05-25 00:00

Debutante director Vivek Sharma ropes in two of Bollywood’s biggest superstars — Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan — a tall order for the newcomer director.

Bhootnath tells the simple story of a ghost in a swanky and neglected house in Goa. The house is considered haunted after the demise of the patriarch of the family.

The ghost, named Kailash Nath, aka Bhootnath (Bachchan), won’t allow anyone to live in his home Nath Villa as there are fond memories attached. A little brat Banku (Aman Sidiqqui) and his shy mom (Juhi Chawla) and happy-go-lucky dad (Khan) come to live in Bhootnath’s house.

Bhootnath has a plan to scare the family away, but runs into the notorious Banku, who mistakes the ghost for an angel and befriends him. Banku and Bhootnath indulge in funny antics and Bhootnath is able to perform magical feats at Banku’s command.

The film takes a twist when Bhootnath’s son (Priyanshu) decides to sell off the mansion. This is followed by relationships, tongue-in-cheek humour and melodrama.

Bachchan is as energetic as ever and continues to charm the audience once again for the umpteenth time. Sidiqqui is brilliant and really stands toe to toe with the Big B of the big screen. Juhi Chawla gives an exceptional performance. Khan in a cameo is first-rate.

Debutante director Sharma is a brilliant storyteller and extracted good performance from his star cast with his simple storyline of a relationship between a spirit and a mortal.

Bhootnath is a brilliant film that will appeal to all ages and should strike the right chord at the box office.
