Big Hindu festival starts tomorrow

2011-01-19 00:00

SOUTH Coast temples will show energetic displays of devotion as part of the biggest Hindu festival tomorrow and on Sunday — the Thai Poosam Kavady.

The Hindu community traditionally holds the Kavady festival between January and February.

After a long fast, the festival will culminate in the carrying of kavady.

Carrying kavady — a beam across the shoulders that bears equally poised weights — symbolises the carrying of one’s burden and then resting it at the feet of Lord Muruga.

The devotees prepare for the festival by cleansing themselves through prayer and fasting.

Tomorrow, devotees will carry kavady and engage in various acts of dedication that reflect a personal choice; they vary from carrying a pot of milk as a kavady, while others pierce their skin, tongue or cheeks.

The festival will take place at various temples on the South Coast tomorrow and on Sunday.

Tomorrow’s Kavady procession will take place at the Umzimkulwana Shri Shiva Soobramoniar Temple at 3 pm, at the Umbango Siva Soobramoniar Temple at 2 pm and at the Siva Temple.

Public Kavady will take place at the Umbango Siva Soobramoniar Temple on Sunday at 6 am and at the Umzimkulwana Shri Shiva Soobramoniar Temple at 7 am.
