Big dry dog food recall

2014-07-18 00:00

SEVERAL brands of dry dog food have been taken off shelves because they have been found to be contaminated.

The brands include Bobtail, Dogmor, Bonzo and no-name brands at traders like Pick n Pay, produced by Foodcorp.

Foodcorp said about 30 000 bags of food produced between June 4 and 23 were affected.

Spokesperson Stephen Heath said yesterday: “As part of our safety procedures, we test all raw ingredients that go into the food.

“We take a sample of the final product for testing at an independent laboratory to make double sure that everything is as it should be.”

It was this external testing that picked up high levels of deoxynivalenol, a toxin that occurs in grain products, he said.

“To our knowledge, the level of toxin in the recalled dog food was not fatal, but dogs could lose their appetites,” Heath said.

He said the recall had more to do with Foodcorp’s quality standards than with any real danger posed to dogs.

Cindy Jenks, manager of Pick n Pay’s technical division, said they had already removed all affected packs from their shelves. “We know our customers are concerned about their dogs, so the removal of these products was done as a precaution,” she said.

Branches have also posted signs warning customers of the problems with the food that they may have already bought.

“Any customer who bought the food at Pick n Pay before the recall can bring it back for a full refund,” Jenks said.

Fresh supplies are expected in shops soon.

No other supermarket chains could be contacted for their reactions.

Vets said they had not experienced a surge in sick dogs.
