Big-time rugby at Ugu

2011-03-11 00:00

THE Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre in Gamalakhe, built to host the Algerian national football side last year during the Fifa World Cup as part of the “2010 legacy”, will be made full use of tomorrow as Vodacom Cup Rugby visits the stadium for the first time.

The Sharks XV are will play the Valke from Eastern Gauteng at 4.30 pm tomorrow and there will be five matches involving local schools and clubs leading up to the main event.

The event will provide the perfect opportunity for the Ugu District to showcase its world-class facility, according to Ugu-South Coast Tourism’s CEO Michael Bertram. “It is critical that all major sporting events are rotated around the province and it is great the South Coast will be associated with the Sharks,” said Bertram. “Saturday [tomorrow] is not only about money but creating longevity that will ensure that our legacy lives on.”

Since the Fifa-approved stadium was built last year, the Ugu District Municipality has been devising plans to ensure its sustainability post-2010. In addition to the sports field, the centre boasts an indoor facility and conference room that accommodates weddings and corporate functions.

Bertram added that the event would provide visitors with an opportunity to experience first-hand the impressive nature of the stadium. “It is a great move for us to be able to put ourselves on the map and to be associated with a union like the Sharks adds attractiveness to our centre,” he said.

“We will be able to expose our product to a new market and hopefully the economic benefits will follow as a result.”

President of the Southern KZN Rugby Union Juno Fourie said that he was excited about the prospect of hosting the provincial side, and added that he was optimistic that members of the public would come out to show their support.

“This is the first time in 20 years that a Sharks side will play on the South Coast,” he said. “We are looking very forward to it and it will also serve as a barometer as to how many people are interested in seeing rugby on the South Coast; we certainly hope that people will be there to support.”
