Big victory

2011-03-19 00:00

TYLER Day, a first-year professional on the Bonitas Medscheme team, captured the biggest victory of his short career when he outsprinted a large bunch to win the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour in Cape Town last weekend. Defending champion, Malcolm Lange, also of Team Bonitas Medscheme, finished second in what was the final race of his professional career, while Herman Fouche (DCM) rounded out the podium places in third.

Day (21), continued to build his reputation as a fearless fast-finisher, when he left his charge for the line until the last 150 metres. He popped out from behind his team-mates and powered down the centre of the finishing straight to secure the 109 km race title in a time of two hours, 32 minutes and10 seconds.

Lange, a three-time winner and the defending champion, punched the air with as much emotion as Day did as he crossed the line just centimetres behind his young protégé.

Team USN’s Cherise Taylor overcame an early mechanical setback that almost ended her race to sprint to a narrow win. The 21-year-old multiple South African champion just managed to pip Ashleigh Moolman Pasio (Nashua Toyota) to the line in a thrilling sprint to win the coveted title for the second time in her career in a time of 2:49:45. English rider Catherine Williamson (Team bizhub) was third.

SA Cross-Country Podiums for KZN

KZN can be proud of their world-class mountain biker Burry Stander (Specialized/USN), who defended his title to secure the South African National Cross-Country Championships at the Delvera Wine Estate near Stellenbosch last weekend — just one month after the Continental African Championships. Defending women’s champion, Yolande Speedy (MTN Qhubeka), won the women’s title in a display of professionalism.

KZN riders certainly dominated the categories with gold medals going to Courtenay Smith (Sprog Girls), Mikaela Jonsson (Sub-Junior girls), Savannah Schuit (Youth Women), Luke Roberts (Junior Men), Ashleigh Parker-Moffatt (Junior Women) and Rourke Croeser (U23 men). Alan Hatherly (Youth Men) and Candice Neethling (U23 Women) placed second and Brendon Davids narrowly missed the podium in the Junior men’s race in fourth place.

The best of SA’s Marathon mountain bikers will descend on KZN this weekend for the SA MTB Marathon Championships taking place at Inanda Dam tomorrow morning. While this prestigious event will attract the best of SA’s riders it is not an exclusive event and riders may choose from the following distances: 85 km, 45 km and 20 km.

MULTISPORT

Cordwalles Preparatory School will be hosting their eighth aQuelle Cordwalles Mudman at Midmar Dam (Orient Park) next Sunday, March 27. Around 1 300 athletes and their families and friends are expected to experience the Mudman spirit. The highlight of the course is likely to be the 120 m Moffatt Optical floating bridge across the farm dam (but there is a chicken run option too)!

This event caters for all abilities with the option of either the full distance course (750 m swim/four kilometre paddle, 20 km MTB and five kilometre run) or the half-distance event (375 m swim/two kilometre paddle, 10 km MTB and 2,5 km trail run). The Mudman can be done as a team or an individual. The McDonalds Mudskipper events will also give the little ones an introduction to the Mudman in a secure, fun environment. Don’t forget to pre-enter and save time on race morning. For details and to enter online, log on to www.cordwalles.co.za or www.mudman.co.za
