Biker Queen ready to ride through nine provinces to remind women of their right to choose

2010-08-07 00:00

KNOWN as the Biker Queen, Seipei Mashugane will be riding through nine provinces in nine days with biker team “The Sopranos” on the One in Nine campaign that aims to create awareness about issues that women face.

Mashugane describes herself as a “girl’s girl” despite her biker talents and can be found riding in miniskirts.

“I am such a lady on my bike, it hurts!” she said, “I can do every stunt that a man can do, but I do it with the grace of a girl and I’m proud of it. I’m very happy with being me.”

Last year Mashugane rode through South Africa’s nine provinces to raise funds and awareness about women in abusive relationships, inspired by her own escape from her abusive marriage. This year, Mashugane is riding to create awareness around women’s choices.

“Women have a choice: a choice to say no; a choice to fertility; a choice to choose; a choice for everything and anything. They have choices from the time that their menstrual cycle begins. There is such a high amount of unwanted pregnancies and women dying from birth complications.

“Women should be able to make their own choices.”

The campaign also aims to raise funds that will be taken to schools and underprivileged communities to educate women about the right to choose.

“When I did the ride last year, I did it to find myself and to empower women, to let them know that they have a choice.”

Her 5 189 km stretch begins in Polokwane on Monday and she plans to travel clockwise through South Africa and return to Johannesburg on August 18.

“Women can always contact me on info@bikerqueen.co.za,” said Mashugane.
