Bikers to bleed for World Cup

2010-05-21 00:00

THE South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has partnered with the Midlands Bikers’ Federation to organise a “Big Bleed” this Sunday at its Jabu Ndlovu Street blood bank.

The initiative is one of a series of public donation campaigns that the SANBS is planning in order to ensure that there is enough stocked blood for the 2010 Fifa World Cup, which kicks off in less than three weeks.

Said Khulekani Zondi, a SANBS spokesperson, “There is no telling what can happen and we would like to have about seven days’ worth of blood supply — based on how much blood is used per day on average — should there be an emergency during the World Cup.”

“We are currently sitting on two to three days’ stock, so there is a lot of work that needs to be done.”

Zondi said that the blood service is planning to have as many donation campaigns as possible between now and the World Cup.

The public relations officer for the Midlands Bikers’ Federation, John Lubbe, said Sunday’s Big Bleed will see more than 60 bikers meet at the Autobahn in Hayfields.

They will ride in convoy to the blood bank in Jabu Ndlovu Street

There, the bikers who are able will each donate a pint of blood.

The midlands bikers have been involved with the SANBS for more than a year, and the members help out whenever they are asked to.
