Bikes stolen four times

2014-08-11 00:00

Morningside cyclist Greg Connell has had four high-end bicycles stolen in a series of night raids in less than five months.

In each robbery, thieves sought out the bicycles and managed to bypass Connell’s home security network.

The theft wave has the avid cyclist’s frustration at tipping point.

“In a period spanning December until April my wife and I had four bicycles stolen from our home. Each time the way they were stolen was the same and we managed to catch the last burglary on CCTV,” he said.

He said that the cycles were collectively worth more than R50 000.

No sooner were the stolen bikes replaced than thieves returned and made off with another haul.

Connell said that the thief or thieves had gone to extreme lengths.

“My last bike that was stolen had actually been chained to the wall and secured with a Rawlbolt that had been set in [to the wall]. The guy had even brought his own tools and managed to remove the bolt from the wall and then carry the bike out. The chain had been run through the spokes so he would not have been able to ride it away,” he said.

“They were so bold in the way that they did it and so specific about what they were after. Nothing else was taken.”

Connell said the thefts had compelled him to hire a night guard to patrol the street outside their Venice Road home.
