Biking champs

THE first round of the Nissan UCI Mountain Bike World Cup held at Cascades over the Easter weekend must be regarded as a great success. It was a coup to get it and those concerned are to be congratulated.

The weather was kind. The racing was a considerable athletic feat which attracted widespread spectator interest. The racing and the TV coverage which it attracted provided a global advertisement for Pietermaritzburg as the capital city of this province.

Bed and breakfasts, restaurants and others in the service industry benefited from the presence of 700 competitors from 35 countries together with 350 support staff and 100 international media representatives, officials and sponsors.

Locally manufactured bicycles were in action on the track. Altogether, it is estimated that some R12 million was pumped into the local economy.

And perhaps the cherry on the top was that the winner was also a local product, Greg

Minnaar.
