Bingo terminals licences court battle adjourned

2015-04-29 00:00

THE legal battle concerning licences for electronic bingo terminals (EBTs) in KZN has again been adjourned indefinitely.

This is while the various interested parties who want to intervene in the matter file further papers in support of their submissions.

The main application in which KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu and finance MEC Belinda Scott seek to overturn EBT licences she alleges were irregularly awarded by the KZN Gambling Board, and a counter application by bingo operators to overturn Scott’s decision to suspend the board, have been put on hold in the interim.

Scott suspended nine board members at the beginning of the year pending an investigation into a decision to grant 650 EBT licences allegedly taken at “secret” meetings held on January 15 and 16.

Galaxy Bingo meanwhile launched a counter application challenging the MEC’s right to suspend the board and ordering her to stop “interfering” with the board’s functions in relation to the issuing of EBT licences.

Court papers alleged there was a suspicion the MEC was protecting the interests of casinos to the detriment of EBT operators who are in competition with them.
