Birkett Varsity Sportsman of the Year

2012-10-12 00:00

DUSI Canoe Marathon winner Andrew Birkett was named the University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg campus’s Sportsman of the Year at the annual sports banquet that was held at the Victoria Country Club last night.

Considered a good club man always willing to help out his fellow paddlers at the university, Birkett won the Dusi Canoe Marathon for the third year in succession and also won the coveted Non-stop Dusi, as well as the Lowveld Croc Canoe Marathon.

The other nominee was SA U21 hockey captain Robin Jones, who is leading the national team in the Junior World Cup Africa Qualifier tournament at Randburg over the next week. Jones also gives much to the local Varsity club.

The Full Blues and Half Blues awards were also announced.

Among the special awards, the soccer club won Club of the Year and Campus League of the Year, while the men’s first hockey team won the Team of the Year award.

Mary-Anne Musonda was announced as the All-rounder of the Year for her involvement in basketball, cricket and hockey, while the Dave Turner Trophy for Leadership went to Vuledzani Ndou of the soccer club.

This year there were no nominees for Sportswoman of the Year as the university sets a high standard of achievement as the criteria and no one attained the requisite level to be considered this year.
