Birthday bash: Gambit the dolphin turns 40

2011-07-30 00:00

ONE of the world’s oldest dolphins in human care, Gambit, will celebrate his 40th birthday at the uShaka Marine World this weekend.

The Atlantic Bottlenose dolphin is also believed to be the largest in any oceanarium in the world, weighing in around 500 kg and 3,65 m in length.

uShaka Marine World will pay tribute to the “messenger of conservation” by celebrating his birthday this weekend. The public are invited to join daily dolphin presentations featuring Gambit and his family tomorrow.

“We are making a weekend of it and will be paying tribute tomorrow at 11.30 am and 3 pm in the Dolphin Arena,” said Ann Kunz, spokesperson for the marine world.

Gambit was brought to the old Durban Sea World at the age of five in 1976 and is father to seven of nine dolphins born at uShaka Sea World and grandfather to one. “He has slowed down now that he is 40 years old, and yet still gives 100% in every interaction we have with him. He is a very creative dolphin, and many of the behaviours he presents in the shows are ones that he invented in creative training sessions,” Kunz added.
