Bisley residents oppose cellphone tower plan

2009-09-22 00:00

PLANS by the cellphone giant, Cell C, to build a cellphone tower in the Bisley area have angered many of the suburb’s residents who say the tower will be a health hazard and an eyesore.

The residents said earlier this month they received notice that the cellphone company is intending to construct a free-standing cellular communication base station at a vacant plot on the corner of Gilbert and Buckley roads.

Currently, the area has poor cellphone reception.

The residents have objected, saying it will be an eyesore that will serve to devalue their properties.

A woman who asked not to be named said residents are in agreement that they do not want the communication station located so close to their living area.

She said there are also concerns that the new structure will present a health hazard.

“There are a number of documented studies that show that the presence of cellphone towers around people is not conducive to good health.”

The municipal councillor in the area, Mazwi Msimang, said he is aware of the matter and is “keeping a close eye on it”.

An environmental practitioner, Renee Royal, said the environmental impact assessment is still being conducted and will be made public.

She said anyone with concerns can contact her at 031 205 8091.
