Bismarck back at hooker for Sharks' crunch clash with Chiefs

SPRINGBOK Bismarck du Plessis is up and running and is back at hooker for tomorrow night’s Super Rugby crunch game against the log-leading Chiefs at King’s Park.

Du Plessis, suffering wear and tear, has been patched up for this crucial game after missing out on the two previous outings on the Sharks tour of Australasia when replacement Craig Burden showed excellent form.

Coach John Plumtree has named an unchanged backline but made two other changes to the pack following last weekend’s win over the Blues in Auckland.

Jacques Botes, replacing brawn with mobility, takes over from Marcell Coetzee on the flank in a rotational switch, while Willem Alberts replaces Jean Deysel on the other side of the scrum.

The promising lock Pieter-Steph du Toit has been included on the bench with Jandre Marais dropping to the Sharks XV and taking over as captain for the Vodacom Cup game against Eastern Province.

Significantly, Springbok prop Beast Mtawarira, who suffered a broken ankle before the Super Rugby season started, also makes a long-awaited returns and will play for the Sharks XV in tomorrow’s curtain-raiser.

The Chiefs also named their side yesterday and Sam Cane has replaced Tanerau Latimer on the flank.

Cane replaces Latimer while Mo Schwalger takes over from Hika Elliot at hooker.

The one change to the backs sees Tim Nanai-Williams making way for Asaeli Tikoirotuma on the wing.

The match kicks off at 5.05 pm

Sanzar have meanwhile brushed the Eden Park missile-throwing incident last week under the carpet.

Sanzar said yesterday they were satisfied with the response from the Blues and Eden Park after Sharks hooker Craig Burden was almost hit by an object while scoring a try.

The initial match report from the Blues did not mention the incident, with Sanzar asking for more information.

A Sanzar spokesperson said in a statement today the organisation had now received a report: “We have received a report confirming the object was a soft rubber ‘stress ball’ giveaway merchandise product. Eden Park security have reviewed the security footage and are unable to identify who threw it, so unfortunately cannot take any further steps to ban the culprit from future matches. Sanzar is happy that Eden Park and the Blues have done everything they can in this instance.”

No further action would be taken, she said.

Sanzar demanded that the Bulls take drastic action when Blues’ hooker Keven Mealamu had an object thrown at him following a game at Loftus.
