Blade: Media report ‘whites’ lies’

2014-04-05 00:00

HIGHER Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande, also the SACP secretary-general, yesterday launched a broadside at newspapers for what he considered biased reporting.

Speaking at the launch of the KZN FET Graduate Placement Programme in Imbali, Pietermaritzburg, Nzimande criticised newspaper coverage of the Nkandla issue, saying it was influenced by the papers’ “white owners”.

“When I was growing up, we used to call the newspapers white man’s lies … and they still are reporting for their white owners,” he said.

Nzimande said media coverage of the Nkandla issue was meant to demean President Jacob Zuma, suggesting that someone other than Zuma had built his home.

He was also scathing of the lack of coverage of his department, saying the media hated him.

“This [Graduate Placement Programme] is a good story. You should report it; it’s good enough for the SABC and it is good enough for The Witness.”

Nzimande said 2 655 KwaZulu-Natal FET college and university of technology graduates had been placed for work-integrated learning and workplace-based experience required for their qualifications and for work experience.

He said five new campuses would be built around KwaZulu-Natal, including one in Nkandla, to expand the department’s drive to enrol more pupils.
