‘Blanket of Hope’ for Sanele May

2013-10-05 00:00

SANELE May will soon be able to wrap and keep himself warm in a hand-stitched blanket of hope and promises from well-wishers.

The Sanele May Support Group has embroidered a blanket with messages of hope and Bible scriptures, which they plan to surprise him with on Tuesday when he appears in court for his bail application.

The red and blue blanket is beautifully decorated with emotional messages and Bible verses.

The main message on the blanket is stitched in Swati saying “Nkulunkulu unawe. Siyakutsandza Sanele (God is with you. We love you Sanele)”.

Nicky Conyers from Namibia, the woman behind the initiative, is hoping the blanket will help May through his darkest hour in the same way a blanket given to her helped her through a rough time.

She was given a “blanket of hope” in 2009 when her marriage crumbled soon after she gave birth to her daughter.

“The blanket changed my life. It gave me something to hold on to. I started reading my Bible and standing on the promises of God. My daughter is now four years old and God provided for us.”

Conyers said she wanted give May the same hope.

“I heard [May] was in a holding cell with no bed. So, I thought a blanket was a good idea.”

She put the idea on the May’s Facebook page and other supporters stepped in to assist. One Durban supporter did all the embroidery, others helped financially.

Conyers said she wanted May to know that, “God sent human angels to make [his] darkest hour bearable”.

May’s support group on Facebook now has more than 10 000 members.
