Blitz on crime nets 28 suspects

2011-11-01 00:00

POLICE made 28 arrests during a crime prevention operation in the Port Shepstone area last Friday.

The arrests were made for drug-related offences, anti-social behaviour, suspected stolen property, drunken driving, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, house robbery, discharging a firearm in a public place and malicious injury to property.

Members of the SA Police Service, the Road Traffic Inspectorate and Protection Services combined forces and visited several liquor outlets in the CBD and surrounding areas, said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

Twenty-seven liquor outlets were visited and patrons were searched for dangerous weapons, drugs, fire-arms and ammunition.

“In general the public co-operated with the police and other forces present,” said Wiid.

Officers recovered 48 knives, two pangas, two screwdrivers, a police jacket, 13 parcels containing dagga, a cellphone suspected to be stolen and household appliances.

“The SAPS air wing also took part in the operation and maintained a hawk’s eye, especially above the taxi rank, while the members searched the area below,” said Wiid.

The operation was supported by the tactical response team.

It was aimed at reducing crime levels and increasing police visibility as ahead of the festive season.
