Blood: Urgent appeal for healthy donors

2008-06-30 00:00

Outbreaks of flu and colds are taking their toll on blood donors, leaving the supply of safe blood running low.

Yesterday, the South African National Blood Services (SANBS) made a desperate call for blood, saying that many of their regular donors have been struck down with colds and flu and are unable to donate, and many of those who are healthy are taking a break during the school holidays.

“Our bloodstocks have been decreasing over the past two weeks … We therefore urge healthy donors to please donate blood to prevent a crisis,” says Mercia Muller, marketing manager of SANBS’s Inland Region.

Muller says “O” and “B” blood types, in particular, are needed as a matter of urgency.

Blood transfusions are not only given in emergency situations, but also for people with cancer, those undergoing an operation and to newborn babies.

People over 16 years of age, who weigh more than 50 kg, are in good health and, most importantly, lead a sexually safe lifestyle may donate blood.

For more information, phone SANBS toll free on 0800 11 9031.
