Blood bank: Appeal to donors to lift stocks

2011-07-08 00:00

KWAZULU-NATAL is running out of blood stocks during this winter season.

According to the South African National Blood Services (SANBS) head of marketing in KZN, Ianthe Exall, collections have dropped significantly over the past week or two due in part to the colder weather conditions in many areas.

“This has put quite a strain on the blood stocks in KZN and currently we are standing at just two days’ supply,” Exall added.

SANBS is trying to build the blood stocks back up to five days’ supply.

The blood is used for all sorts of cases, ranging from bleeding during childbirth, cancer treatment, programmed operations and trauma cases

Exall said colds and flu have also impacted on the collections. “Because of the school holidays it is hard to reach our daily target of 500 units of blood collected. If you are fit and healthy and in the age between 16 and 65, weigh more than 50 kg and lead a sexually safe lifestyle, please go forward to donate blood.”

Donate blood at the Pietermaritzburg Blood Donor Centre situated at 294 Jabu Ndlovu Street.

The BTC Group at number 5 Quarry Road will open its door for donors on July 18 from 10 am until 4 pm. — WR.
