Blood: day’s supply left

2012-09-27 00:00

HEAVY rain in September, which discouraged people from venturing out to donate blood, has resulted in blood shortages in KwaZulu-Natal.

The KZN South African National Blood Service (SANBS) head of marketing, Charles Maharaj, said: “It has been a struggle since then to try and catch up with the shortfall. This has been exacerbated by flu viruses that have hit the province, rendering many donors unable to donate blood.”

The province currently has 1,2 days stock of blood. Normally, it should have a supply of four-and-a-half to five-and-a-half days.

Group O stock, which is used in emergencies, is the blood group that is at critical levels and group B stocks have also dropped drastically.

Maharaj said group B blood was mainly collected from the Indian community, and Hindus were fasting this month, which made them ineligible to donate blood.

“We’re calling all blood donors who are due to donate to please visit their nearest blood donor centres,” he pleaded.

SANBS collects 30% of its blood from schools, and with schools closing today, Maharaj fears that they will suffer further shortfalls.
