Body of man found, shot in the head

2015-01-30 00:00

POLICE have found the body of Hendrik Havenga (53), who went missing from his Margate home last Monday. He had a gunshot wound to the head.

A stockman stumbled across a decomposed body in Gcilima on Wednesday after following a stench that came from the field he was leading his cattle to.

Police spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka said the man’s daughter, Chantelle Odendaal, was able to identify Havenga by the clothes he was wearing.

She said after police contacted her last Tuesday, they went to her father’s Margate home where they found the security gate and door unlocked.

“He was a perfectionist and would have never left the house unsecured. There were no signs of forced entry, but my dad would have never left the doors unlocked. I suspect that someone forced him to leave home,” she said.

Early last Tuesday morning someone noticed Havenga’s car abandoned in the Bushy Vales area near Ramsgate.

“When police searched the vehicle, they found documents with his employer’s details on it. Someone from his office then contacted me,” said Odendaal.

“I last saw my dad on Saturday [January 16]. I spoke to him the next day at about 7 pm and he sounded fine. He was probably at home because it was very quiet in the background.”

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.

Havenga is survived by his daughter, son, De Wet Havenga, and a host of family and friends.

Margate SAPS are investigating the murder.
