Body of man removed from Duzi

2014-08-13 00:00

THE body of an unknown man was found floating in the Duzi River yesterday.

Lieutenant Jack Haskins of the Pietermaritzburg K9 Search and Rescue Unit said they were called by the DUT Riverside Campus’s security after a body was found floating there near Aberfeldy Road.

Head of security at DUT Patrick Pillay said the man who cleans the student buses noticed a terrible stench coming from the river and informed them he had spotted a body. “We then called police,” he said.

Haskins said it seems the body had been in the water for more than a week.

“At this stage, we can’t identify the race of the man,” said Haskins.

When the body was removed from the water a noticeable scar was seen on the man’s neck. This left police baffled as to whether the man drowned or whether his throat was slit and he was thrown into the river. Haskins said a postmortem will be done to determine the cause of death.
