Bogus cops rob man and friends

2014-02-04 00:00

A FORMER police officer and an accomplice were arrested on Sunday for pretending to be police officers and demanding money from city residents.

Pietermaritzburg resident Yusuf Billy (20) and his two friends were approached by the two men, who forced their way into his home on Sunday evening. Both men were in civilian clothing, but identified themselves as police officers. The one man produced a name badge bearing police insignia.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the two suspects then questioned Billy and his friends about a person and when they told the men that they knew nothing, the alleged “policemen” then demanded cash from the victims.

“It is further alleged that the victims then complied and handed over R300. The two men then fled, but were cornered by police officers who were tipped off. They were immediately arrested after the cash and badge were found in their possession,” said Zwane.

The two suspects, aged 36 and 40, will appear in court today.
