‘Bogus doctor in tender scam’ in Durban court today

2012-06-21 00:00

A 27-YEAR-OLD man who allegedly posed as a doctor and promised to organise tenders at KwaZulu-Natal hospitals is due to appear in the Durban Commercial Crimes Court today.

He was arrested on Tuesday at Pinetown’s Compton Hospital, said police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane.

The man often wore a stethoscope around his neck and a white coat when he allegedly conned people by promising them tenders and jobs.

“He would not ask for bribes directly, but would offer to represent people in meetings, and his victims would have to pay for his flights to Pretoria and expensive hotel accommodation,” said Zwane.

He said it was not known how long the man had been conning people.

Some of the man’s alleged scams included promising his victims tenders to build a new hospital and call centre in Durban, to procure uniforms and to supply stationery and catering to hospitals.

Police found him with documents bearing fake logos of private hospital groups, the provincial Department of Health and banking institutions.

He was also in possession of forged tender award letters, tender advertisements, employment letters and invoices.

Zwane said the man also allegedly perused job advertisements in print media and on the Internet, and then targeted businesspeople.
